How to Convert ePub to Kindle

This brief tutorial will take you from a Word document to a Kindle (.prc) file. (I’m assuming that you already know many of the basics!)

1. Beginning with your Word document…
- Place your cursor in the document where you would normally want a TOC
- Go to References -> Table of Contents -> Insert Table of Contents -> uncheck “show page numbers” and select how many levels (i.e.,  select “1″ if you only want H1′s in the TOC) –> click “OK”
- Save the document
- Select and delete the TOC that now appears in your document
- Save the document

2. Save your Word document as a “.html” file
- Go to “File” -> “Save As” -> “Web Page, Filtered” -> Save as “.html” file type

3. Go to Calibre
- Click “Add Books” and add your .html file
- Click “Edit Metadata” and complete that section
- Click “Convert books”
– Select “output format” as “epub” (input format will already be “zip”)
– Go to “Page Setup” and select “Kindle” as “output profile” and “Default Input Profile” as “input profile”
– Complete the other sections as you normally would and click “OK” when finished

4. Go to Sigil
- Open the .epub file you just created above in Calibre
- Click “Tools” -> “TOC Editor” -> confirm your TOC entries and click “OK”
- Click “Tools” -> “Meta Editor” -> confirm entries and select “English” as language -> click “OK”
- Click “Validate Epub” -> confirm there are no errors -> save document

5. Go to Calibre
- Select the book you are working on
- Click “Convert books”
– Select “output format” as “mobi” and “input format” as “epub”
– Go to “Page Setup” and again select “Kindle as “output profile” and “Default Input Profile” as “input profile”
– Click “OK”

6. Locate your file and change the file extension from “.mobi” to “.prc”

7. View it in an actual Kindle if you can to verify that it looks good to you!
